Border Crossings Between Gambia and Senegal

You encounter two West African states where Senegal almost completely surrounds Gambia along a 749 km border split into northern and southern sections on either side of the Gambia River. The line starts at the Atlantic coast and follows parallels roughly 10 km from the riverbanks in places, with straight segments and a small eastern deviation. Main crossings include Karang-Amdallai in the north on the Dakar-Banjul route and Farafenni-Keur Ayib further south; smaller posts and local ferry options exist for river crossings.

You prepare for the journey by confirming ferry schedules if using river routes or road conditions on the main highways. Northern posts see regular bus and trader traffic linking Dakar and Banjul, while southern ones support Casamance connections. Dry season keeps roads firmer; rains from June to October can affect low-lying areas near the river. Have passports and small currency ready for fees and stamps. After passing through you access Banjul markets or continue to Ziguinchor in Senegal. Stay patient with occasional checkpoints along the corridors.
