Border Crossings Between Romania and Serbia

The border between Romania and Serbia is largely a natural one, defined for much of its length by the mighty Danube River. This frontier is home to one of Europe's most spectacular natural sights: the Iron Gates gorge, where the river cuts a dramatic path through the Carpathian Mountains to the north and the Balkan Mountains to the south. There are nine official crossings in total. The most significant road crossings are at Stamora Moravița (RO) and Vatin (SRB) in the west, and at the Iron Gates I Hydroelectric Power Station further east. Crossing at the Iron Gates is a unique experience, as the road runs directly atop the massive dam that spans the entire river.

This dam, a joint project completed during the Yugoslav era, is a testament to past cooperation and a remarkable feat of engineering. The views of the dramatic cliffs and the sheer power of the river from the top of the dam are breathtaking. Other crossings are smaller and include several ferry services at various points along the Danube. This is a border where the natural landscape, particularly the majestic Danube, is the dominant feature, shaping the journey and offering unforgettable scenery.
