Overland Travel Across Borders: A Tale of Two Frontiers
Liberia and Guinea River Frontier
You join two Mano River states along a 590 km border that runs from the Sierra Leone tripoint in the west to the Ivory Coast tripoint in the east. Liberia and Guinea share this line defined largely by the Makona, Nianda, and Mani rivers following a 1907 Paris agreement. Main official crossings include points near Yekepa or John’s River in the Nimba and Lofa areas; several smaller posts and paths support local movement but face occasional service gaps like limited mobile coverage.
Liberia-Guinea Practical Notes
You check current security alerts before travel due to past tensions and reported incidents along sections of the line. Dry season from November to April offers better road access with less flooding on river crossings; rains from May to October raise water levels and create delays. Carry identification and small local currency for fees. After stamping through you reach mining areas around Yekepa in Liberia or continue toward Nzérékoré in Guinea. Plan buffer time for standard checks at posts.
