Named by Thunder
Sierra Leone was named by Portuguese explorer Pedro de Sintra, who called it “Serra Leoa” or “Lion Mountains.” The name was inspired by the dramatic sound of thunder rolling through the hills, which reminded early visitors of a lion’s roar.
