Overland Travel Across Borders: A Tale of Two Frontiers
Niger and Mali Western Sahel Link
You join two landlocked countries along an 828 km border from the Burkina Faso tripoint in the west to the Algeria tripoint in the east. Niger and Mali share this line with river sections including the Niger River itself. Main crossings sit at Ansongo (Mali) to Ayorou (Niger) and Andéramboukane; boat options exist along the river for some movement.
Niger-Mali Crossing Notes
You confirm security in eastern border zones before heading out. The western posts handle local trade and herding traffic. Dry months from November to April bring better road conditions; rains affect river crossings and tracks. Carry identification and CFA francs. After stamping through you reach Gao or Timbuktu routes in Mali or continue toward Niamey. Allow buffer time for checks at these Sahel posts.
