The border between Montenegro and Serbia is a passage through the mountainous heart of the Dinaric Alps, a frontier that until 2006 was merely an internal boundary within a single state. The shared history and culture are palpable, and the journey is characterized by stunning natural scenery. The main road crossing is at Brodarevo on the Serbian side and Bijelo Polje on the Montenegrin side. This route follows the Lim River valley and is the primary corridor for trade and travel between the two nations, winding its way through impressive mountain landscapes. There are several other smaller crossings in the remote Sandžak region as well.
Perhaps the most famous and spectacular way to experience this border is by train. The Belgrade-Bar railway line is a marvel of 20th-century engineering, renowned as one of Europe’s most scenic rail journeys. The line passes through 254 tunnels and over 435 bridges as it climbs through the mountains, crossing the border in a remote, almost inaccessible area. The journey offers breathtaking views that are impossible to see from the road. Whether by rail or by car, crossing between Montenegro and Serbia is a journey through a shared and ruggedly beautiful landscape.
