Border Crossings Between Moldova and Ukraine

The border between Moldova and Ukraine is one of the most complex and unusual in Europe. It is characterized by its long, winding shape and, most significantly, by the presence of Transnistria. This is a narrow, unrecognized breakaway state that runs along the eastern bank of the Dniester River and is internationally recognized as part of Moldova but maintains its own government, military, and border controls with the backing of Russia. This situation creates a complicated travel picture. There are over 60 designated crossing points between Moldova and Ukraine, but many of these lead into or out of Transnistria.

The main international crossing for most travelers, avoiding Transnistria, is at Palanca. This crossing itself is unique: the road from southern Moldova to Odesa in Ukraine briefly passes through a small section of Moldovan territory that is only accessible through Ukraine. For a time, it was administered jointly. It is absolutely crucial for travelers to ensure they receive a Moldovan entry or exit stamp at an official, internationally recognized Moldovan post. Entering Moldova from Ukraine via Transnistria without getting a Moldovan stamp can lead to legal problems when you later try to exit Moldova proper.
