You will first go to the Tanzanian immigration counter and get your passport stamped for exit. You will then walk a few meters to the Malawian immigration counter in the same hall. Here, you will present your passport. You must check the visa requirements for your nationality for Malawi in advance. Many nationalities can get a visa on arrival, but some are required to get one in advance. You will pay the fee in US dollars. You will also need your yellow fever vaccination certificate. After getting your Malawian entry stamp, you will go through a single customs check for your luggage. If you are in a vehicle, you will need to pay a carbon tax and purchase temporary third-party insurance for Malawi.Exiting Malawi and Entering Tanzania: The process is the same in reverse. You will get your Malawian exit stamp and your Tanzanian entry stamp (visa on arrival is also available for Tanzania) in the same building.

Route, Onward Travel, and Lake Malawi
This crossing is on the main highway. On the Tanzanian side, the nearest major city is Mbeya, which is a major transport hub with a railway station (on the TAZARA line) and an airport. From Mbeya, it is a scenic 2-3 hour bus ride to the Kasumulu border. The journey takes you through the beautiful Tanzanian highlands. On the Malawian side, from the Songwe border, it is about a 1-hour drive to the city of Karonga, the main hub of northern Malawi. From Karonga, you can get buses south along the shore of Lake Malawi to other popular destinations like Nkhata Bay (a famous backpacker hub) and on to the capital, Lilongwe. The road along the lake is one of the most beautiful drives in Africa. For those without a car, there are direct international bus services that run from Mbeya in Tanzania to Mzuzu in Malawi, which handle the border crossing as part of their journey. This is a very convenient option.
