You will pay the fee in US dollars. After getting your Zambian entry stamp, you will go through a single customs check for your luggage. If you are in a vehicle, you will need to pay a carbon tax and purchase temporary third-party insurance for Zambia. You will get your Zambian exit stamp and your Malawian entry stamp (visa on arrival is also available for Malawi for many nationalities) in the same building.

This crossing is on the main highway between the two capitals. On the Malawian side, the road from Lilongwe to the Mchinji border (about 1.5-2 hours) is a good, paved highway. On the Zambian side, the road from the Mwami border to Lusaka is known as the "Great East Road." It is a long journey of about 8-10 hours, but the road is paved and in good condition, passing through a beautiful landscape of rolling hills and rural villages. The most common and highly recommended way for travelers to use this crossing is by taking one of the many direct, high-quality international bus services that run between Lilongwe and Lusaka. Companies like Kobs and Soames are very popular. The journey is a long one, but the buses are comfortable, and the company staff assist with the border formalities, making it a very easy and stress-free option. This crossing is the gateway to some of southern Africa's greatest attractions, including the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia (one of the best wildlife parks in Africa) and the magnificent Victoria Falls.
