Ruggell & Feldkirch Border Crossing
Ruggell – Feldkirch
The border between Liechtenstein and Austria stretches for about 35 kilometers through the Alps, connecting the tiny principality with the Austrian state of Vorarlberg. As both countries are part of the Schengen Area, travelers can usually cross without routine passport checks. Several local roads link communities on both sides of the border, with the busiest crossings found between Schaanwald and Feldkirch, as well as near Mauren and Tosters. The route is popular with commuters, cyclists, and visitors exploring the Rhine Valley. Border crossings are generally quick and straightforward, although customs or police may carry out occasional spot checks, so keep a valid travel document with you. Winter snow can affect mountain roads, but the main crossings remain open throughout the year. Since Liechtenstein is part of the Swiss customs area, Swiss francs are commonly used there, while Austria uses the euro, making it useful to carry both currencies or a payment card. If you have time, visit the medieval streets of Feldkirch or enjoy the museums and mountain scenery around Vaduz before continuing your journey.
