Border Crossings Between Armenia and Azerbaijan

The entire land border between Armenia and Azerbaijan is currently closed to all travelers and has been for decades. This frontier is one of the most heavily militarized in the world, a direct consequence of the long and painful conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Following major hostilities in 2020 and 2023, and a subsequent peace process, there are ongoing discussions about reopening transport links, but as of now, no regular crossings are open for public use. The border area itself is not safe for travel, with many official government travel advisories recommending against approaching it due to the risk of landmines and sporadic ceasefire violations. Recent developments in 2024 and 2025 have seen agreements on border delimitation and plans for a specific transport corridor to connect mainland Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave through Armenian territory. However, this future route is a specific, controlled project and does not signify a general opening of the border for independent travelers. For the foreseeable future, you cannot travel directly between the two countries by land, and any attempt to do so would be impossible and extremely dangerous. All travel must be done through third countries like Georgia or Iran.
