Monthly Update (October 2026):

In October 2026, the frontier continues to operate without routine passport or customs checks, as it has since the UK–EU agreement on Gibraltar began to apply provisionally on 15 July 2026. Final approval by the European Parliament is still pending. Spot checks remain possible, so carry your passport or EU ID card.

About this crossing

Location and Basic Connections

The frontier sits at the southern end of La Línea de la Concepción, in Spain's province of Cádiz, on the narrow isthmus that joins the Rock of Gibraltar to the mainland. From the frontier, the road on the Gibraltar side runs past the airport into town. Algeciras, Los Barrios and San Roque, the other towns of the Campo de Gibraltar, are a short drive away on the Spanish side.

What Changed on 15 July 2026

On 15 July 2026 the UK–EU agreement on Gibraltar began to apply provisionally. Routine border controls at the land frontier ended at midnight, and the old checkpoints and fence were taken down the day before. Passport checks for travellers arriving from outside the Schengen area now take place at Gibraltar's airport and port instead. The agreement still needs final approval by the European Parliament; until then it applies provisionally.

Crossing Procedure Since July 2026

There is no routine document check in either direction, on foot or by car. Spot checks are still possible, so carry a valid passport, or a national ID card if you are an EU or EEA citizen. UK citizens should carry a passport: a driving licence is not a travel document. If you drive, also carry your driving licence, the vehicle registration and proof of insurance.

Customs and Shopping Allowances

There are no customs controls at the land frontier for now. Under the agreement, people travelling between Gibraltar and Spain have a duty-free allowance of €300 by land (€430 by sea or air) for an initial period of three years, and standard quantity limits still apply to tobacco, alcohol and fuel. Check the current limits with HM Customs Gibraltar before buying tobacco or alcohol to take into Spain.

Driving and the Airport Runway

Cars and motorcycles enter Gibraltar through the Kingsway tunnel under the eastern end of the airport runway, open since March 2023. Pedestrians and cyclists still cross the runway itself on Winston Churchill Avenue; the crossing closes for a few minutes whenever an aircraft takes off or lands.

Opening Hours and Queues

The frontier is open 24 hours a day. With routine checks gone, walking across is usually quick. Traffic can still build during the weekday morning and evening commute, when thousands of people travel to work in Gibraltar (around 15,500 cross-border workers a day), on busy summer weekends and during local events. Many visitors park in La Línea and walk across.

Parking in La Línea

Several car parks are within walking distance of the frontier: the Santa Bárbara car park next to the border on Avenida Príncipe de Asturias, the covered Alcaidesa Marina car park, about ten minutes' walk away, and the Centro car park on Calle Real, about fifteen minutes away. Prices and opening hours change, so check the signs. Parking in Gibraltar itself is limited.

Money

Gibraltar uses the Gibraltar pound, which is at par with the British pound, and sterling is accepted. Many shops also take euros, often at a less favourable rate than paying in pounds or by card.

Final Planning Notes

Carry your passport or EU ID card even though routine checks have ended, avoid the commuter peaks if you are driving, and consider parking in La Línea and walking across. The new arrangements are still bedding in, so check the Government of Gibraltar's notices before you travel.
