Border Crossings Between Libya and Niger

The Libya and Niger border stretches for about 342 kilometers across one of the Sahara's most isolated regions. You will find one recognized formal border crossing between the two countries: Tummo, also spelled Toummo or Al Toum. The crossing connects southern Libya with northern Niger and sits on routes used for movement between the Fezzan region and the Agadez area. The surrounding desert is extremely remote, with long distances between settlements and very limited services.

Tummo has a history tied to security, migration, and informal desert trade. You should not treat this as a conventional road border: access can be restricted or interrupted, and control of the crossing has changed between armed groups and Libyan authorities. In January 2026, fighting briefly disrupted control of Al Tummo before eastern Libyan forces reported regaining the post. The Sahara also brings serious seasonal challenges. Extreme heat, limited water, sand, and poor road conditions can make travel hazardous, while security conditions can cause additional delays or closures.
