Border Crossing Field Brief

Frontera Corozal–Bethel

The Bethel & Frontera Corozal crossing is a river crossing on the Usumacinta, between Frontera Corozal in Chiapas, Mexico, and Bethel in Guatemala's Petén department. There is no bridge: you cross by lancha, a small motorboat, and it is the classic overland route between Palenque and Flores.

Monthly Update (October 2026):

Frontera Corozal & Bethel remains a remote river crossing rather than a conventional highway gateway, so local transport and river conditions matter more than vehicle queues. There is no major October closure reported, while Mexico and Guatemala have recently restarted formal discussions on border infrastructure and operations. Those talks are focused on improving the wider frontier rather than introducing an immediate change at Frontera Corozal.

About this crossing

Location and Basic Connections

Frontera Corozal is a small riverside community at the end of a side road off the Carretera Fronteriza (Highway 307), a few hours by road from Palenque. Bethel sits upriver on the Guatemalan bank, in the municipality of La Libertad, and a road runs from there through the Petén towards La Libertad and Flores. Part of that road is unpaved, so allow plenty of time.

Crossing the River

Boats leave from the landing in Frontera Corozal. You can take a lancha straight to Bethel, a ride of roughly half an hour to 45 minutes, or a short shared boat across to La Técnica on the Guatemalan bank and continue by road. Prices are agreed at the landing and change often, so confirm the fare before you board. The river is wide and fast in the rainy season, and boats run in daylight only.

Border Formalities

Get your Mexican exit stamp at the immigration (INM) office in Frontera Corozal before you get in a boat, and keep proof of your Mexican entry with you. The office keeps daytime hours and has been reported closed at times, so ask locally the day before. Guatemalan entry formalities are done at the immigration post in Bethel. If you use the La Técnica boat, make sure you still report to Guatemalan immigration on the way. Guatemala is part of the CA-4 agreement with Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua, so your entry stamp covers travel in all four countries.

Documents to Carry

Carry your passport, any visa you need for Guatemala, and some cash in Mexican pesos and Guatemalan quetzales. There are few or no cash machines at the river, so change money before you arrive.

Hours and Timing

Treat this as a daytime crossing. Both immigration offices work daytime hours, and onward transport towards Flores mostly leaves in the morning. Shuttles booked in Palenque usually collect passengers very early, cross in the morning and reach Flores in the late afternoon. If you travel independently and miss the morning connections, plan to stay the night in Frontera Corozal.

Yaxchilán and Bonampak

The Maya city of Yaxchilán lies downriver from Frontera Corozal and can only be reached by boat. Many travellers visit it, and the nearby murals of Bonampak, on the way to the border, which turns the crossing into a two-day trip with a night in Frontera Corozal.

Safety

The Usumacinta valley is remote and lightly policed. Travel in daylight, use the organised boat services at the landing, and keep your documents dry. Parts of the Chiapas border have seen violence by criminal groups in recent years, so check your government's travel advice before you go.

Final Planning Notes

Get your Mexican exit stamp first, cross in the morning, carry cash in both currencies and expect a long day on the road to Flores. If you want to see Yaxchilán, give yourself an extra day.
