Border Crossings Between South Sudan and Sudan

The 2,158-kilometer border between South Sudan and Sudan is one of the world's newest and most troubled international frontiers. Born from Africa's longest civil war, it is a line that remains poorly demarcated, highly militarized, and is currently engulfed by devastating conflicts on both sides.

While a number of potential crossing points exist on paper, there are no safe, formal, or reliable crossings open for you as a traveler. The border cuts through remote, undeveloped regions and is the site of numerous unresolved territorial disputes, most notably over the oil-rich Abyei area.

This entire frontier is an active conflict zone. The civil war that erupted in Sudan in 2023, combined with the persistent instability and inter-communal violence in South Sudan, makes this region exceptionally dangerous. The border is porous to armed groups and refugees but is an impassable barrier for any form of regular travel.

You must not, under any circumstances, attempt to travel to or across this border. It is one of the most dangerous places in the world. The journey is not possible, and the risks of violence, kidnapping, and death are extreme.
